Steven Colvert and Kieran Kelly Top Men’s Tables.
Steven Colvert’s (UCD AC) reputation as a risng star is backed up by his domination of the Irish sprint scene this year. Lowering his Personal Bests to 10.52 for 100m and 20.9 for 200m, he also qualified for and competed in the European Championships in Barcelona. His consistency all year gives him a massive 44 points topping the 100m and 200m League Table. Interestingly, Colvert didn’t win any 100m race on home soil, yet he was still 11 points clear of National Champion Jonathon Holmes (Kilkenny City Harriers) and also Chris Russell (Ferrybank), both tied for 2nd on the league table.
Paul Hession (Athenry AC) takes second on the 200m league table with 30 points from only 2 races and Chris Russell again proves his class to place third on 25 points.
Jason Smyth and Paul Hession may top the 100m and 200m rankings respectively, but Colvert’s potential is an exciting prospect and there seems to be no limit to what he can do. This is after all only his second year training and competing in athletics.
Kieran Kelly (Raheny Shamrock) finishes a very successful season by topping the 400m table, with Gordon Kennedy (Tullamore Harriers) in second. Kelly scored 31 points from 5 races compared to National Champion Kennedy’s 25 points from 2 races. This shows that consistency and determination to compete regularly will win out over one or two outstanding results. Brian Murphy (UCC AC) finished third with 21 points, just edging out Brian Gregan, a single point behind with 20 points.
